TRIM TAB CONCEPT
ANALOGY: The trim-tab is a tiny part of the rudder of a boat (plane,
too).
When you find and turn the trim-tab slightly, you can move the whole
boat or plane.
Using this analogy, societal trim-tabs are those areas that
with maximum ease can produce maximum impact.

The TRIM TAB
Concept Essay: Maximum Impact
with Maximum Ease
By
Philip Duane Johncock
“Success is the maximum
utilization of the ability that you have.”
Zig Ziglar
Last month, Dr. Kathlyn Hendricks encouraged a
group of leaders to try on an intention that she has found
particularly useful in her life: “maximum impact with maximum
ease.” Personally, for the last few years, I’ve intended to
generate “maximum impact with least amount of effort.”
Listening to Dr. Hendricks, I decided to replace ‘least amount
of effort’ with ‘maximum ease’.
Here, I’d like to begin this essay with two
examples of “maximum impact with maximum ease.” The first is
personal. The second is an observation of the development over
time of curriculum and training of the Hendricks Institute.
From these two examples, I plan to introduce the
analogy of ‘trim tab’ as a way of conceptualizing “maximum
impact with maximum ease.” I plan to provide several ‘trim tab’
examples that serve as case studies for this concept that I may
consider for future doctoral research.

Life Purpose Trim-Tab Example
"In 1927, I committed myself for the rest of my life
to undertaking the solution of problems which were not being attended to by
others which experience taught me would, if effectively solved, greatly
advance society and, if left unattended, would bring about comprehensive
disadvantages for all."

Call
Me Trim Tab
"The engineer
Buckminister Fuller is often cited for his use
of trim tabs as a metaphor for leadership and
personal empowerment. In the February 1972 issue
of Playboy, Fuller said:
Something hit me
very hard once, thinking about what one
little man could do. Think of the Queen Mary
-- the whole ship goes by and then comes the
rudder. And there's a tiny thing at the edge
of the rudder called a trim tab.
It's a miniature
rudder. Just moving the little trim tab
builds a low pressure that pulls the rudder
around. Takes almost no effort at all. So I
said that the little individual can be a
trim tab. Society thinks it's going right by
you, that it's left you altogether. But if
you're doing dynamic things mentally, the
fact is that you can just put your foot out
like that and the whole big ship of state is
going to go.
So I said, call me
Trim Tab."

With Dr. Gay Hendricks, I co-created a
Genius Course Online. One of the premises of the course is that often what keeps us from
living in our genius (our uniqueness, magnificence and full creativity)
is that we stay addicted to mediocrity and playing it safe. The course
serves as a catalyst for people interested in moving beyond addictions
to mediocrity and suffering by stepping fully into their genius in ways
that maximize impact with maximum ease. When we do so, life works
great! When we don't, it won't.
Session
8 (of 13) of the course focuses specifically on ‘trim tabs’ and how to
generate a high ratio of abundance for time and energy spent. The
course includes some of my own original work as well as that of
Drs. Gay
& Kathlyn Hendricks and Dr. Jean Houston.
In order to make the latest Genius technology available to more people,
I created two ‘give aways’: 10 Essential Genius Questions and a
free monthly newsletter, called Genius Contagion. Over 1000
people have signed up already for these.
I
also have taught a dozen or so ‘live’ courses on Genius. I co-authored
with Megan Sillito a book called the
Power of Living Genius, now
in it's second edition in only two years and now with a Companion
Journal. It
includes a the image of genius as the pie tin and carves out eight
pieces of the genius pie: claiming uniqueness, qualities, playing full
out, having fun with barriers, reconceiving, rewiring for wealth,
enhancing energy, and finding your purpose.
To assist in making the latest Genius technology
available to people, we offer two "give aways": a free monthly newsletter, called Genius Contagion
and 10 Essential Genius
Questions.

One of the place where we personally, relationally and professionally
‘get stuck’ in our lives is when we are out-of-integrity. To ‘get
unstuck’, create more flow, and live in our genius, it is helpful to
have practical ways to know when we're out of integrity with ourselves
and others, as well as specific action steps to get
back-into-integrity. This may be one of the most important skills for
successful conscious business and global capitalism.
I
co-authored a book called the Power of Integrity with Dr. Gay
Hendricks. The book provides simple practices to build strong
foundations, increase aliveness and create thriving relationships
through understanding and applying the four pillars of integrity
discovered by Dr. Gay Hendricks: impeccable agreements, healthy
responsibility, authentic communication and emotional presence.
Also, the
Genius Course Online includes
several lessons on the four pillars of integrity.

Social Artistry is inspired by the times we life
in and certainty that this stage in history is pivotal to the future
of all people and the planet. It is a unique form of global
leadership that inspires the creation of teaching/learning
communities, activating human capacities and creative talents and
collaborating with global communities. Social Artistry embraces
the need to consciously apply ourselves to our own
development, the
new greening of the planet, and the re-genesis of society.
Social Artistry is based on the work of
Dr. Jean Houston.
I learned about the trim tab analogy from Dr. Jean
Houston during a 2001 summer institute on ‘social artistry’. I
began to see how Dr. Houston was an international trim tab person
and that social artistry had the potential of being a world-wide
trim tab field of study. This is because of Dr. Houston’s
involvement and teachings plus of the caliber of people that social
artistry is attracting.
After the 2001 summer institute, I became interested
with how to further social artistry as a field. Along with a few
others, we created a nonprofit organization called the International
Institute for Social Artistry (IISA). We created a community of
social artists through ‘communities of practice’ (teleconferences
and listserves), trainer certification, even a Masters of Leadership
in Social Artistry degree program.
For more information, visit the International
Institute for Social Artistry (IISA) website at
www.socialartistryinstitute.org.
I designed and manage the website and serve on the IISA
board. IISA has created a Masters degree program in Social
Artistry, a Social Artistry Leadership Training program, and has
provided training in Social Artistry to leaders in developing
countries, in conjunction with the United Nations.
In January 2007, I began a Ph.D. program with
a concentration in Ethical and Creative Leadership at
Union Institute and
University. The proposed topic of his doctoral studies was
Leadership in Social Artistry with a focus on trim-tabs. With changes in the structure
at Union, however, the focus changed to this new concentration.

Once I (Philip) heard Dr. Kathlyn Hendricks say
something like, “The last 5% of a person's self-growth can often be
the hardest to assess and complete; it requires a person to attend
to the first 5% of his or her life.” Often, a person will have
all the skills necessary to be happy and successful, but somehow
fall short of their full potential. Dr. Hendricks found that by
becoming aware of unconscious patterning and incompleteness around
early developmental stages (conception, prenatal/womb, birth and
bonding stages), we can unwind unconscious patterns and be in
control of (rather than at the affect of) early experiences.
Research shows how imprints/patterns from early
stages of our human and brain development can happen. I attended a
conference of the American Association for Prenatal and Perinatal
Psychology and read many books on the subject to understand these
stages and brain development. The Hendricks have researched and
found interesting correlations in our adult lives that appear in
certain situations, such as parenting, relationships, and key life
transitions. My research with them is also revealing easy and fun
ways to notice the patterns (usually where we get stuck in our lives
and repeat the same patterns) and become more conscious, acting from
authenticity and essence rather than at the affect of unconscious
patterning.
I co-taught a Parenting Course with Dr. Kathlyn
Hendricks applying these insights for parents. I co-taught a
teleconference course, called "The Art of Presencing.” I weaved
insights into other products, including the
Power of Living
Genius book. I’d like to do more in this area, but just haven’t
found the appropriate venue. I had proposed to include this
research in my Ph.D. application to Union. But, with the new cohort
structure, I’m not sure if this is an area I can pursue now.
