THE TRUE SELF

by Philip Johncock, M.A.

(This article appeared in In Light Times in 1996)

How can I find my TRUE self?....a question I’ve been asked a lot lately.

Recently, I conducted a little research to see what some of the leading thinkers and teachers of our day are saying about the TRUE self. Here’s what I found:

University of Metaphysics’ President Dr. Paul L. Masters teaches that transcending the ILLUSIONARY SELF (which has been manufactured for us by the suggestions of others since childhood) aligns our personal (or conscious) self with our true or GOD-SELF and our true purpose for being here (God’s purpose individualized).

Gay and Kathlyn Hendricks teach that using the tools of DEEP LISTENING without judgment and AUTHENTIC SPEAKING leads to trust, integrity, and truthfulness in all relationships; the result is a sense of safety (largely due to a lack of criticism and judgment) which frees an individual to share his/her true self more honestly and openly.

Sacred Geometry and Flower of Life Teacher, Drunvalo Melchizedek, instructs that to connect with the true self, or HIGHER SELF as he calls it, one must connect through the LOWER SELF; this is done by becoming more innocent and child-like again, feeling nature come alive, and seeing the presence of Spirit in everything.

Ascension Coach Joshua David Stone and Reiki Master Teacher William Rand both stress the importance of strengthening the actual connection (the antakarana) between the PERSONALITY and SOUL (and MONAD, the level higher than the soul).

James Redfield, author of The Celestine Prophecy, uses the Eighth Insight to show how the true or higher self can be activated and energized through projected energy and intention.

Tantra teacher, author, and my mentor, Margo Anand, teaches that reawakening our TRUE ecstatic nature begins with surrendering and accepting all aspects of ourselves, including our sexuality.

These are but a few of the many ways to connect with one’s true self. All are powerful and have reached millions of people around the world.

After researching others’ thoughts, I did a little personal reflection. I made a list of some indicators that tell me when I am IN my true self.

  • When I like being me and feel ecstatic and energized just being who I AM
  • When life is easy and flows effortlessly through and around me
  • When I feel a strong connection with my Higher Self, a power greater than myself, while at the same time feeling solid in my center
  • When I am grounded in the present moment
  • When I value, esteem, and confide (have confidence) in myself
  • When I am absolutely honest with myself and others, admitting when I don’t know something, have been inappropriate, or have made a mistake
  • When I allow the universe to support me and my efforts (and actually feel it happening)
  • When my male and female sides dance with and support each other
  • When I am vulnerable enough to share who I really am, with all my imperfections, and ask for help when I need it (I consider my vulnerability one of my greatest strengths, not a weakness.)
  • When I deeply listen with eyes and ears in my heart (without judgment)
  • When I intuit and act upon my inner guidance (intuition)

All relationships, even every-day ones, help us strengthen the connection with our true selves. Every interaction, every RELATING brings a seed of GODDING potential, clues that can lead us to the most authentic parts of our selves. When these seeds are acknowledged (made conscious) and nurtured deep down in the core of each of our individual beings, the essence of the true spiritual self begins to flower, filling the world with our unique aroma, flavor, and beauty.

Ask yourself, In my interactions, where is my focus? On the God-seed, or on the mundane?

There is also a medicinal power in TRUTH. Do you promise to speak the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you, God? It’s more than just a silly judicial oath. Truth is spiritual. It’s healing. It’s ecstatic. And, when we align ourselves with the truth about who we really are, look out! The power of the universe is at our call, and magic happens. Miracles happen. The TRUE self we are so diligently searching for magically APPEARS, as if it’s been waiting there all along, waiting to be received.

So, how does one recognize ‘truth’? Well, everyone’s TRUTH GUAGE is different and unique. Pay attention to the confirmation signals your body gives you when you resonate with a deep truth. A dear friend, Catherine, gets goose bumps that she calls GOD BUMPS. Another friend, Annie, sees lolly-pops throughout her body. Some people experience a part of themselves igniting or lighting up like a light bulb. I feel ecstatic sensations throughout my whole body. In a quiet moment from your center, check with your body and find out what your TRUTH GUAGE is.

And please remember: Everyone has the right to their own truth.

May the magnificence of your truth and true self shine within and throughout to the world!
